DIGITAL PLATFORMS / DESIGN NOTE

Build a platform around the journey

Digital platforms often grow by accumulation: one more form, tool, payment method or integration. The result can still be fragmented if the system is designed around features instead of the journey users need to complete.

Digital platforms often grow by accumulation: one more form, tool, payment method or integration. The result can still be fragmented if the system is designed around features instead of the journey users need to complete.

Start with the system, not the slogan

Map the whole journey. Include discovery, decision, payment, fulfilment, service and exception handling. Look for repeated data entry, unclear status, hand-offs that disappear and tasks that force users to leave the experience.

Make the invisible explicit

Define system boundaries. Decide which platform owns products, customer records, orders, billing, payment state and service requests. Integrations work best when data ownership, retries, errors and reconciliation have explicit rules.

Validate the assumptions

Design for operations as well as the front end. Support staff need clear status, audit trails, exception queues and useful metrics. Security, accessibility, backups and observability belong in the first architecture conversations.

THE TAKEAWAY

A coherent platform does not need to do everything. It needs to make the most important journey predictable and connect the systems that support it.
